The longstanding equipment shortages at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) in Borno State, Nigeria, forces patients and medical students to travel over 100km to Yobe State for requirements as basic as CT scans.

A situation predating the September 2024 floods that damaged the existing few facilities in UMTH Maiduguri.

The flood though was not entirely to be blamed for the dysfunctional nature of UMTH maiduguri, the UMTH Miaduguri has been ceremonially confirmed to have a bed capacity of 1,305 beds but an under functional hospital of such capacity will always remain behind the smaller, well maintained 250-bed ultra-modern Yobe State Teaching Hospital in Damaturu,

It will shock you but there is clean cut clear disparity between the management of the two health facilities where the Maiduguri facility relies heavily on rhetoric like political eye service and vague projects delivering empty architectural edifices, the Damaturu teaching hospital, in Yobe state like I stated much smaller and in the neighboring state fulfils basic medical infrastructure serving Borno residents.
