The story of  Niger State ghost workers cannot be told enough with nearly 40%  of the staff being fake workers or dead yet they join the real workforce to earn salaries every month. According to the State Government on Thursday, it had uncovered about 333 “dead civil servants” in its payroll.

It added that N207m had uncovered as being paid as salaries to fake civil servants in the state amounting to about N5bn in the past two years.

The Chairman of the screening committee set up by the state government to fish out ghost workers, Ibrahim Panti, said since the screening was ongoing more revelations would be mad.

He said, “Out of the purported 27,000 civil servants on the pay roll of the state government, only 15,907 of them have been discovered to be our genuine workers so far.

“There are 3,923 workers from different ministries having pending issues and are still being investigated. These set of people had entered the state civil service with fictitious certificates.

“Within the last two years, 333 dead civil servants are still drawing salaries from the state government. All these fraud must stop,” the chairman said.

According to the chairman, 1,029 other civil servants whose names are on the payroll have yet to appear for screening.

He added that at the end of the screening, they would be officially declared as ghost workers.

“All those involved have given confessional statements on their involvement in the fraud and officials of labour in the state are aware of this development,” Panti said.

Panti said all those found guilty would be prosecuted.
