| The Supreme Court has fixed May 27 for judgment in an application filed by former governor of Rivers State and current Transport Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, seeking to stop his probe in an alleged N96billion fraud. |
The matter is presided over by Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who chairs a seven-man panel of Justices of the Court
Amaechi, in an interlocutory application, prayed the Apex Court to prohibit his ex-Chief of Staff and successor, Wike from investigating his eight-year tenure as governor and alleged fraudulent sales of valued assets belonging to Rivers State.
Wike, who is now an opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP presidential aspirant, had constituted a 7-man probe panel to probe Amaechi, who is also a presidential aspirant on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Amaechi’s counsel, Lateef Fagbemi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria,, SAN, had in his submission before the Supreme Court opposed the probe.
Fagbemi argued that the probe was aimed at witch-hunting and embarrassing Amaechi in view of his political differences with his successor.
Wike, on his part, however, prayed the Supreme Court to dismiss Amaechi’s suit.
Meanwhile, an anti-corruption group, “Say No To Corruption In Nigeria,” has in a statement on Monday called on the people of Rivers State to be on alert as they await the Supreme Court’s judgment on the matter.
