Policemen in the Asokoro area of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, have returned N300,000 they stole from two women on Wednesday.

Via two PoS transfers on Tuesday, the police sent N240,000 and N60,000 to Esther Mwalk, one of the victims of the illegal arrest and extortion.

Confirming the development to FIJ on Tuesday morning, the Police Complaints Response Unit (CRU) said, “They (the errant policemen) have refunded the money, please confirm.”

When FIJ spoke with Favour Ahgu, the other victim, she said, “They just did (refund the money). Thank you so much.”

This comes 24 hours after FIJ reported how Usman Abushieye, Moses, Peter and other policemen arrested Ahgu and Mwalk at Millennium Park in Maitama and took them to Asokoro Police Station to detain them.

There, the police made them part with the sum to secure their freedom.

The CRU said that although the action took place in the Asokoro station, the policemen were not from there.

“Our findings show that they are from another section of the force,” the CRU said. “They will be dealt with when we conclude investigation.”

Earlier, Abushieye, whose account number received N100,000 of the total sum, denied the extortion and claimed he caught the women on camera smoking in public.

When FIJ asked him if he had proof of this claim, the policeman could not provide any.

FIJ has reported on several cases of police abducting citizens and making them part with money.
