The University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu, has responded to allegations of negligence surrounding the death of Mrs. Charity Unachukwu, who passed away on September 20, 2025, after being admitted following a car accident.
The hospital’s management, in a statement issued on Sunday, regretted the unfortunate incident and expressed its deepest condolences to the Unachukwu family, acknowledging the grief expressed in the public account shared on social media.
SaharaReporters earlier reported that Charity’s sister, Phina Unachukwu Ezeagwu, had expressed the family’s pain in a post shared on her Facebook page on Friday, saying, “UNTH killed my sister with negligence of duty.”
According to her, the family experienced a “heartbreaking ordeal” at UNTH, citing delays and poor medical response that ultimately led to Charity’s demise.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Public Relations Officer of the hospital, Uchelue Boniface, said the management of UNTH condoled with the family of Unachukwu and pledged a thorough investigation into the incident, following concerns raised publicly.
According to Uchelue, the Chief Medical Director of UNTH cancelled his official trip abroad to personally oversee an independent and transparent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Charity’s death.
The investigation, the statement added, will review emergency admission procedures, laboratory and diagnostic services, as well as inter-departmental coordination to identify any systemic or individual lapses that may have contributed to delays in her care.
“We recognise the pain expressed in the detailed account shared publicly and acknowledge the grief of the family, their friends, and sympathisers,” said Uchelue.
“Losing a loved one under any circumstance is devastating, and we share in this sorrow.”
UNTH reassures the public that the investigation will be thorough and conducted transparently.
“Where lapses are confirmed, corrective and disciplinary measures will follow. The hospital prioritises systemic improvements to ensure compassionate, safe, and effective healthcare for all,” it said.
Recently certified as a Level 3 teaching hospital by PharmAccess for quality improvement, UNTH affirmed its commitment to attaining Level 4 certification by next year.
Uchelue emphasised the hospital’s commitment to accountability and quality care, adding that the hospital’s motto, “Service to Humanity,” guides its actions.
“We appreciate the public’s vigilance and trust, and we reaffirm our commitment to compassionate, safe, and effective healthcare for all,” Uchelue added.
