The camp of opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary has ruled out challenging the results of Cameroon’s October 12 presidential election, insisting that the results collated proved he won the election.
Speaking on Radio Balaf on Thursday morning, Emmanuel Simh, a close ally of Tchiroma, dismissed the idea of approaching the Constitutional Council.
“To do what?” he asked rhetorically, expressing doubts about the council’s impartiality.
His remarks reinforce Tchiroma’s earlier declaration of victory and refusal to accept any outcome other than his own.
Tchiroma, who leads the Front for the National Salut du Cameroon (FSNC), has insisted that the election was won by the people and that legitimacy lies in public conviction, not legal arbitration.
His stance echoes past criticisms of the Constitutional Council, which opposition parties, most notably the Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon (MRC), have accused of favouring incumbent President Paul Biya.
Meanwhile, a professor of law and leader of the Univers party – Nkou Mvondo, has urged Tchiroma to respect the country’s institutions.
“When we go to a competition like this one, we have accepted the rules of the game; we have to wait until the verdict of the ballot boxes is made official,” he said.
As of October 15, 10 appeals have been filed with the Constitutional Council by various parties, including the PCRN, SDF, and UDC, seeking partial or total annulment of the vote.
The National Commission for Final Counting, composed of judiciary, administrative, and candidate representatives, has been formally constituted, according to a resolution by Elections Cameroon.
