Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, has given reasons why he is not prepared to jump ship from the Peoples Democratic Pary (PDP), and move to the All Progressives Congress (APC) along with Governor Douye Diri.
Governor Diri and Senator Ewhrudjakpo were elected on a joint PDP ticket in 2019 and re-elected in 2023.
Ewhrudjakpo while distancing himself from the defection of Governor Diri to the APC, stressed that the PDP remains solid and formidable in the state and across the country, stressing that there was no justification whatsoever for some members of the executive and legislative arm of government in Bayelsa State to abandon the platform that gave them political prominence.
Ewhrudjakpo particularly said that as the Deputy Governor, he alongside the elders of the PDP in the State, particularly Senator Seriake Dickson, former lawmakers, are still with the PDP and are going nowhere.
Governor Diri had on Wednesday, announced his resignation from the PDP through his spokesman, Daniel Alabrah, but did not disclose reasons for his defection to the APC.
Following the development, the Deputy Governor, Ewhrudjakpo refused to attend the State Executive Council meeting where the governor announced his decision, thereby signalled his refusal to defect with his principal.
The refusal of Ewhrudjakpo to defect with Governor Diri has not settled well with members of the State House of Assembly that moved with Governor Diri to the APC, thus threatening to commence impeachment proceedings against him for declining to jump ship.
The lawmakers are insisting that the refusal of the Deputy Governor to defect to the APC with his principal amount to “gross misconduct” which is an impeachable offence.
The deputy governor, a lawyer and former senator who represented Bayelsa West, has been a prominent figure in the PDP and has held several strategic roles, including serving as chair of the Nigerian International Coastal Border Platform.
