YANEGOA: The Bayelsa State Police Command has ordered a mental health evaluation for Inspector Sunday Ideh, who was recently arrested for brutally assaulting his three children over alleged claims that they were witches.
The Command said the psychiatric test would help determine the officer’s mental state before proceeding with criminal prosecution.
LIB earlier reported that the police officer was taken into custody over the weekend after disturbing footage of him beating and torturing his children surfaced online, sparking outrage from human rights groups and the public.
Confirming the development, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Sanusi Mohammed, disclosed the update when members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), led by its Vice Chairman, Vivien Brisibe, and the Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Bayelsa State branch, Dr. Boma Miebaiwho, visited the command headquarters in Yenagoa
Mohammed described Ideh as a previously upright officer before the shocking incident but assured that the case would not be swept under the carpet.
He stressed that the officer would face justice, adding that the Command remains committed to protecting children and upholding human rights.
The suspect is expected to undergo both medical and psychological assessments before being formally charged to court.
