The family of retired Delta State High Court Judge, Justice Ifeoma Okogwu, is struggling to understand the mystery surrounding her death, saying only a thorough investigation can reveal what truly happened inside her Asaba home.
Her brother, Ogbueshi Godfrey Okogwu, who spoke through tears, said the family’s greatest burden is the uncertainty. “Only God knows what truly happened,” he said. “We are waiting for the police to tell us what they find.”
For the family, the most troubling detail is not just the discovery of the jurist’s body, but the disappearance of the night security guard who was supposed to protect her. His whereabouts remain unknown days after the tragedy.
Police later detained the morning guard and invited the owner of the private security firm for questioning. However, it is unclear if the company boss has responded to the invitation, further deepening the family’s concerns.
The morning guard reportedly told investigators that he arrived to meet the house unsecured and the gate wide open—an explanation the family finds unsatisfactory. “He said he just sat there. Sat there doing what?” the victim’s brother wondered aloud.

Relatives who entered the home said the property appeared ransacked. Early observations suggested Justice Okogwu may have been tied up before she died, raising suspicions that her attackers may have had help or inside knowledge.
The retired judge, known for her firm judicial pronouncements and devotion to her work, lived quietly after retirement, according to neighbours. Her sudden death has shocked the entire community behind The Pointer Newspapers.
The family said they immediately provided police with the details of the security company that deployed the guards, hoping that the investigation will uncover whether the incident was planned or opportunistic.
Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta Command, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed that two suspects were in custody while one security guard remained on the run as detectives intensify efforts to unravel the case.
For now, relatives are trying to support one another while coping with the loss of their eldest sister someone they described as gentle, disciplined, and deeply committed to her family.
As the investigation continues, the Okogwu family is pleading for justice, urging authorities to bring everyone involved to account. “We just want the truth,” her brother said softly. “We need closure.”
