President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has increased his additional ambassadorial nominees to 65, according to two separate letters read to senators on Thursday by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio.
In the letters, Tinubu designated 34 of the nominees as Career Ambassadors/High Commissioners, and 31 others Non- Career Ambassadors/High Commissioners, bringing the number of additional nominees to 65.
When added to the three names the President forwarded to the Senate earlier last week, the total number of nominees came to 68.
The first three nominees were Kayode Are (Ogun State); Aminu Dalhatu (Jigawa State); and Ayodele Oke (Oyo State).
Ambassador Sulu-Gambari Olatunji Ahmed (Kwara State); Ahmed Mohammed Monguno (Borno State); and Maimuna Ibrahim from (Adamawa State), among others were named in the list of 34.
Among the new names on the non-career list were former Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (retd.); former presidential aide, Senator Solomon Ita Enang (Akwa Ibom); and former Chief of Army Staff, General Abdulrahaman Dambazzau (retd).
In his letters, Tinubu explained that his decision was backed by Section 171 (1, 2 and 4) of the 1999 Constitution, as he urged the Senate to speedily confirm the nominees.
Akpabio, upon reading the letters, referred them to the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs. The committee was mandated to screen the nominees and return a report within a week.
