Abuja Is No Longer Safe!!! I never thought I’d be writing this, but it’s important to share,not to scare anyone, but to remind us to stay alert.
A few days ago, I got robbed in broad daylight along the express near 2K Supermarket and Market Square in Abuja. Now, before you jump to conclusions …no, I didn’t go out too early, and I wasn’t alone. It was around 7:30 a.m., the sun was out, cars were passing, and people were already heading to work. Everything seemed perfectly normal… until it wasn’t.
The man who attacked us looked completely normal,neatly dressed, like someone heading to work. As we walked, I noticed a shadow following us from behind for about thirty seconds to a minute. Something about his movement felt off. When I looked back, he didn’t look particularly dangerous, but my instincts told me otherwise. I whispered to my niece that we should run. I had my taser in my pocket, thinking I was prepared.
But just as we were about to move, he pulled out a long, sharp knife and threatened to stab me if I didn’t give him my phone. In that moment, fear paralyzed me. My taser became useless. As we tried to run, I stumbled and fell hard on my knees. My phone slipped out of my pocket and honestly, that might have been what saved me.
He snatched it, ran to the other side of the bridge, and jumped on a waiting bike with his accomplice. At first, I had no intention of sharing this ordeal. But I feel compelled to, because I’ve always encouraged people to take street walks for fitness without really considering the risks. I’ve been walking outdoors for almost a year now, and nothing bad had ever happened,until this day.
Abuja and honestly, many cities aren’t as safe as they used to be. We need to be extra cautious. So please: -Avoid walking along isolated or express routes, even during daylight.
-If you don’t live in a secured estate, consider exercising indoors, going to the gym, or getting a walk pad.
-If you drive, always lock your car doors properly when parked.
-Don’t leave bags, phones, or valuables visible inside your car not even for a minute.
Stay alert. Stay safe. Abuja is no longer as safe as we think. 🙏🏽
