The Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, has dismissed speculations that some lawmakers are plotting to remove the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio. He described the claims as false, misleading, and a deliberate attempt to create unnecessary tension within the National Assembly.
Speaking during Wednesday’s plenary, Bamidele assured that there had been no discussion or move among senators regarding Akpabio’s removal. He emphasized that the upper chamber remains united and focused on tackling issues that directly affect Nigerians.
According to him, the rumours were purposely spread to destabilize the legislature and divert lawmakers’ attention from their constitutional duties.
“There was no attempt by any of our colleagues, nor any discussion about removing the Senate President from office,” Bamidele said. “We are fully united and have a zero-tolerance approach to distractions because there are urgent issues of public importance that need our attention. Reports like these are clearly meant to create confusion.”
His clarification came after Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who represents Abia North Senatorial District, had earlier referenced reports of alleged failed attempts to impeach Akpabio.
Kalu, who also addressed journalists on Tuesday, confirmed that some people had indeed made attempts to remove the Senate President.
“There were attempts, but we didn’t allow that to happen. We are one big family, and it’s not going to happen,” Kalu stated.
Bamidele, however, reaffirmed that such insinuations were baseless and did not reflect the position or mood of the current Senate.
