An unnamed commercial driver, who was exposed in May for suspected one-chance robbery in Ibadan, Oyo State, has struck again.

One-chance robbery typically takes place in public transportation. A driver connives with members of a syndicate who pose as fellow passengers to rob unsuspecting victims.

When Jesugbemi, a social media influencer, first shared a three-minute video that captured this driver and members of his syndicate on May 15, he added this caption: “When will this nonsense stop in Ibadan?”

Then on Wednesday night, he quoted the video with, “I posted this on the 15th of May. It’s sad that this same man roams the street, with his Godforsaken micra.”

The video captures a three-member robbery gang, which includes the driver, a front-seat passenger and a woman, who claimed to have stolen $1.5 million from her boss.

The woman can be heard sharing how her boss, who hired her as a househelp, had terminated her employment before the agreed date. As the driver and the front-seat passenger, a man, pretended to interrogate her, she pleaded with them not to hand her over to the police.

Both men even invited their ‘would-be victim’, who was filming them secretly, to the conversation, asking for her cooperation on how to share the supposed $1.5 million.

“I will give everyone $10,000,” the woman is heard saying when the passenger in front asked her what she would give them to buy their silence.

Despite sharing the video on X two months ago to alert the authorities, no action has been taken, and the driver struck again on Wednesday.

Deola, an X user, was robbed by the same one-chance driver around the Akobo area of Ibadan on Wednesday. They took her phone and money.

Quoting Jesugbemi’s two-month-old video hours after her initial post on the robbery, she exclaimed, “This is the man!”

Her comment made Jesugbemi escalate the matter again by tagging relevant authorities on X. Responding on Thursday, the Oyo State Government Feedback platform wrote:

Thank you for contacting us. Your previous report was escalated to the appropriate authorities. We will send this as a reminder to ensure the matter receives the necessary attention. Meanwhile, citizens are also advised to call 615 or the Amotekun Coordinators in their LGA to report security emergencies.

FIJ spotted comments from others who have had similar experiences in Ibadan and other cities like Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt. In most cases, the criminals follow the same script as seen in the circulating video.

They often lure unsuspecting victims with stories about stolen money and offer them a share. The moment a person agrees to take part or even shows interest, they trick and rob them of all valuables.
