A former speaker of the House of Representatives, Ibrahim Salisu Buhari, who resigned after falsifying educational qualification has been turbaned as Iyan Daura by the Emir of Daura Umar Faruk Umar.
Speaking on the turbaning ceremony, the deputy president of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, who was also a member of the First Assembly, said the event was attended by dignitaries from across the country.
“Today, I joined other dignitaries and well-wishers to attend the turbaning ceremony of the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Ibrahim Salisu Buhari, who was conferred with the title of Iyan Daura by His Royal Highness, the Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Farouk Umar, CON.
“The colourful ceremony, graced by dignitaries from across the country, took place at the Emir’s Palace in Daura, Katsina State. The event witnessed the turbaning of Dr. Gazzali Salisu Buhari, as “Makaman Kasar Hausa,” and Dr. Samira Salisu Buhari, as “Daurama Karama,” Mr Jibrin wrote on his Facebook page.
Mr Buhari, who is the first Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives after Nigeria’s return to democratic system of government in 1999, falsely claimed that he graduated from the “Toronto University” and that he was born on January 3, 1963.
According to The News Magazine, Mr Buhari claimed that he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Toronto, Canada in 1990; a diploma in accountancy from the Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, Zaria in 1988, and that he served under the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC in 1991. Again, Buhari was said to have been born on 3 January 1963.
It later emerged that Mr Buhari was actually born on January 3, 1970, making him 29 years at the time he contested and won election to the House, whereas the constitution pegs the age limit for a member of the House at 30.
It was also revealed that he actually got admission into ABU but that he was withdrawn because he falsified his credentials.
Mr Buhari resigned as both member of the House and speaker on July 22, 1999, less than two months after his election.
