The Lagos state Judiciary Panel, set up to address allegations of human rights against men of the disbanded SARS, dismissed a petition by one Paschal Bonu who is seeking to enforce a N300m damages against SARS.

The panel was led by Justice Doris Okuwobi who described the petition as an abuse of court processes. The police counsel, Joseph Ebosereme raised a preliminary objection against the petition and objected on the basis that an appeal had already been made to the Supreme court on the same case and it was pending.

Ebosereme also mentioned that the Federal High Court awarded the 300m damages to Bonu but the went on appeal, the Court of Appeal upheld the judgement of the Federal High Court but reduced the damages to N30m and a further appeal has now been filed at the Supreme Court.

He added that the coming of the petitioner to the Panel would result in double jeopardy. He also said that despite the reduction of the damages, the petitioner was already making a move to garnishee the Police for N300m.

The panel ruled against Bonu’s petition and said that it would resist any temptation to bring it on a “collision course” with the appellate court.
