Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Enugu State, Dr. Ben Nwoye, escaped death on Saturday as heavily armed gunmen launched an attack on his residence in the Independence Layout area of Enugu.

Nwoye was not injured during the attack but the yet-to-be identified hoodlums wounded one of the police officers attached to him.

The police orderly, Gerald Eke, was reportedly shot in the head.

The gunmen also made away with the policeman’s official rifle.

Eke is currently receiving treatment at the Federal Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu.

Our correspondent learnt that the policeman is in a critical condition.

Spokesman for the Enugu State Police Command, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the incident.

When contacted by our correspondent, Amaraizu said, “We are on it”.

Nwoye, who said the hoodlums engaged the policemen attached to him in a gun battle when they invaded his compound around 2:00 am, accused some leading members of the Enugu State APC of being behind the attack.

He specifically mentioned the factional chairman, Deacon Okey Ogbodo, a former Secretary to the State Government, Chief Onyemauche Nnamani, as well as the ‘factional governorship candidate’, George Ogara, as suspects.

However, Nnamani, in a swift reaction, said he has no hand in the incident.

Nnamani, who served as SSG during the administration of former governor Chimaraoke Nnamani, said, “It is laughable, it is tragic comedy. You people have time for him. There is no iota truth in his claim.”

Ogbodo and Ogara could not be reached at the time of filing this report. Calls to their phones did not go through.

The police had yet to make any arrests in connection with the incident but the ongoing crisis in the Enugu State chapter of the APC has taken a new twist as a result of the development.
