Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has been alleged to be deeply involved in constituency projects scam.
Projects are allegedly inserted in the name of his Lagos constituency
through the National Refugees Commission without any trace of execution, even after the funds were released.
A reliable source alleged that projectsworth N750m was routed through the Commission in the 2015 budget in favour of Gbajabiamila.
The source equally alleged that the Majority Leader since his coming to the House of Representatives in 2003 had attracted to himself projects worth N1.5bn on yearly basis, under the guise of constituency projects.
It was further alleged that he was involved in using his position in the House to secure businesses to himself and family within the National Assembly complex, some of which are worth millions of naira, and personally managed by his wife under his close supervision.
One of such alleged businesses is a canteen operated within the National Assembly complex.
The source expressed concern that in spite of benefiting from constituency projects over the past 12 years, Gbajabiamila did not have any project in his constituency to justify the funds.
Only last Saturday, erstwhile Appropriation Committee Chairman of the House, Abdulmumin Jibrin, had also featured Gbajabiamila in his list of Principal Officers, who have allegedly helped themselves with public funds in the Green Chamber.
Jibrin had alleged that Gbajabiamila was receiving N1.2bn as allowance under the controversial allowances to members since he came to the House.
The source also alleged that Gbajabiamila betrayed the Body of Principal Officers by approaching the police to be investigated over allegations by Jibrin a day after their meeting and collective position on the matter in defence of the House.
The source said other principal officers viewed the action as a premeditated plan to send a message to the public that he had clear his name and that others should also do the same.
This, the source further said has made him to incur the wrath of all the principal officers, who are already very suspicious of his actions.
“Did he tell the police that his constituency project in 2015 worth N750m was channeled through Refugees Commission instead of Lagos State?
“Is the canteen he and his wife run at the National Assembly part of his constituency project?” the source queried.
The Majority Leader would not respond to telephone calls and text messages to his phone, when confronted with the allegations.
Even, his phone was switched off on some occasions.
However, our correspondent got through to his media aide, Olarewaju Smart, who said in a telephone conversation that his boss was free from such allegations.
Smart said that items in the budgets were clearly stated and that everyone was free to approach the Refugees Commission to confirm if Gbajabiamila was guilty of the allegations.
He said that legislators do not handle projects but the various Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, which were in position to confirm if funds were actually released for the said projects but were never executed.
“Legislators don’t get cash to execute any constituency project. It’s the MDAs under the Federal Government that execute projects in constituencies,” Smart stated in a terse text message to our correspondent.
