The police have dispatched the Tactical Squad of the Inspector-General of Police, the counter-terrorism unit and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, among other security agencies to free the Magajin Garin Daura, Alhaji Musa Umar, who was kidnapped by gunmen in the town on Wednesday.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Gambo Isah, who spoke with SUNDAY PUNCH on Friday, however, said the efforts had not been able to secure the release of the monarch.
He said, “We are still on the trail of the abductors but nothing substantial yet. The IGP Tactical Squad, SARS teams, PMF (Police Mobile Force) and counter-terrorism units have already been deployed to rescue the victim alive and safely to his family.
“The command enjoins members of the public to always assist the security agencies with timely and actionable intelligence on the activities of bandits. They should be assured that the command and other security agencies are working to end activities of bandits.”
Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in Daura, Katsina State, and its surrounding towns following Wednesday’s kidnap of Umar, who was still being held by his abductors as of Saturday.
The police have increased their patrols in the ancient town. There is also police presence at the main entrance to the palace of the Emir of Daura, Dr. Faruq Umar, including Umar’s residence located along the Sarkin Yara (b) area on Muhammed Bashar road.
About five Hilux police patrol vehicles were parked in front of the house with heavily armed policemen on the alert during our correspondent’s visit to the place.
They, however, didn’t harass the sympathisers who trooped into the house.
The mood was sober at both the palace and residence of the kidnapped leader.
Security was also beefed up at the various entry points to Daura especially areas connecting Daura to Katsina, Kano and the border town, Kongolam.
Makeshift speed breakers have been erected on highways in surrounding towns, including Shargalle, Mashi and Kayauki among others.
In Katsina, police still mounted checkpoints at night in some places like Kofar Kaora Junction, Mani Road Roundabout and the Dandagoro area.
The Sarkin Labarun, Daura, Usman Ibrahim, said the family and the emirate council were engaged in fervent prayers for the safe return of the kidnapped district head.
