ABUJA, Nigeria — The Katsina State Government on Thursday unveiled a new fleet of hybrid-electric buses, marking a major step in Governor Dikko Radda’s bid to modernize public transportation and promote cleaner, more sustainable mobility across the northwestern state.
The launch, held at the Abuja facility of Woerka Nigeria Limited, a Chinese automobile manufacturer, underscored the administration’s growing focus on environmentally conscious development. Hybrid-electric buses combine an electric motor with a smaller internal combustion engine, reducing fuel consumption and emissions compared with traditional vehicles.
“This initiative is not just about transport—it’s about building a greener future for Katsina,” said Oshi Benard, president of Ben 10 Equipment Company, a key partner in the project. “Governor Radda is hard-working, industrious, focused, and dedicated. His vision is transforming how ordinary citizens live and how young people find opportunity.”
The hybrid bus project follows Radda’s visit to China last year, where he led a delegation to secure partnerships with leading agricultural and industrial equipment manufacturers. Officials say the buses will initially operate in Katsina, Daura, and Funtua, with plans to expand the network statewide.
“The introduction of these buses will transform intra-city movement and ease commuting for residents,” Mr. Benard added. “We want to especially thank Governor Dikko for giving us this great opportunity to promote a world-class project.”
State officials say the rollout is part of a broader agenda to align Katsina’s development with national and global sustainability goals—an effort they hope will inspire similar initiatives across northern Nigeria.
