The Department of State Services (DSS) in Kano State, yesterday, stated that it has arrested 29-year-old Sule Arome for allegedly parading himself as an Assistant Commissioner of the department and for also promising to recruit unsuspecting people into the service.
According to Arome, before he was arrested, he had already recruited four persons into the non-existing DSS after collecting money from them.
The DSS, while parading the suspect, explained that he was arrested during a raid of black spots at Hausawa Zoo Road.
The DSS disclosed that Arome collected N15, 000 each from the four persons, who fell into his trap and believed that he had the power to facilitate their employment. The suspect allegedly told his victims that the recruitment fee per head was N6, 000, including operational suits. He also asked them to purchase training kits.
The DSS Director, Kano State, Alhassan Muhammad, further explained that the suspect also directed his victims to report in Kaduna State on January 25, 2020, where they spent three days at Kawo Motor Park, waiting for him.
Muhammad said: “We got the report after the victims returned from their unsuccessful trips to Kaduna. We then organised an operation, raiding black spots, which led to the arrest of Arome.”
Muhammad said that the suspect, determined to ensure his victims continued to believe his pack of lies, sent a ‘Call Up Text Messages’ to his victims, asking them to prepare their Curriculum vitae (CV) and use him as their referees.
Arome, who confessed that he actually recruited four persons, added that he decided to do what he did because Hisbah Sharia Police once arrested him. While in Hisbah Sharia Police Custody, he lied that he was a DSS officer and was promptly released. He discovered how easy it was to lie about being a DSS officer, thus started pretending to be one.
His words: “I pretended to be a DSS officer in order to free myself from the Hisbah Police. Afterwards, I told people that I was an Assistant Commissioner of DSS. I told them that if anyone wanted to join the DSS, that I could help.”
Muhammad said that Arome will be arraigned in court on Monday.
