However, sources close to the Enugu Government House say Governor Peter Mbah is leaning toward a younger, more technocratic candidate someone who can consolidate support for both him and the president without threatening his grip on the party’s internal structure.

Former Governor Sullivan Chime is said to be actively pursuing the position, leveraging his long-standing influence and enduring goodwill among Enugu citizens. Chime’s tenure remains fondly remembered for its administrative efficiency and infrastructural development, giving him a solid base of public respect.
However, insiders note that Chime’s age and political stature could work against him. Governor Mbah, sources say, is wary of appointing a figure who might command independent loyalty or challenge his authority, potentially unsettling the delicate power balance within the state’s ruling bloc.

Close associates of Governor Mbah describe him as an “ideal candidate intelligent, loyal, and politically non-threatening.” Mbah’s preference for technocrats over traditional politicians is well known, and Dr. Bede’s international credentials and quiet influence within Abuja’s APC circles make him particularly appealing.
Dr. Bede is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (London) and holds a Doctorate in Business Administration, further strengthening his technocratic appeal.
Dr. Davidson Nnamani: The Dark Horse
Another promising figure is Dr. Davidson Nnamani, a respected academic and defense strategist from Isi-Uzo LGA in Enugu East Senatorial Zone the same zone as Governor Mbah.
Though he possesses impressive professional credentials, critics argue that his candidacy may upset the state’s delicate zoning balance, with calls for the next minister to emerge from Enugu West or Enugu North instead.
