MONUMENTAL SCANDAL: AFN PICKED NON- NIGERIAN GAVE HOM.A NIGERIAN NAME AND MADE HIM.COMPETE IN OLYMPICS

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) is enmeshed in an alleged fraudulent recruitment of an American, Mark Jelks, who featured as a Nigerian at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

The unfolding scandal was exposed by the athlete, Jelks, on his Facebook account, where he claimed to have been part of the fraud as a mistake.

Jelks won the Nigerian national trials in 2014 in the 100m and represented Nigeria in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

In his Facebook page, Jelks who says he is now a born again Christian confessed to making a big mistake.

He said: “For many of you that know me, I ran track and field for quite some time, I was really good at it. I was blinded by my own ambition, I didn’t realize my identity was based off of what track and field say I was, so I was the runner Jelks.

“Towards the end of my career I made poor decisions based on a lie that I told myself.

Obviously referring to his decision to retire as an athlete with Nigeria instead of the USA his real country which he represented all through his youth.

He ended his “confession” saying, ” I messed up, I made a decision that was not based on your word, he is faithful to meet you where you are, and redirect you to the path of righteous.”

In his confession, Jelks also made allusion to the fact that changing his nationality did not bring the peace and satisfaction he desired. And he was not ordered by God to prove how fast he was.

It would be recalled that the Athletics Federation of Nigeria recruited Mark Jelks to run for Nigeria at the twilight of his career, just to win medals at the Commonwealth Games.

Nigerian Olympian, Eniefiok Udobong, who opened the lead on the scandal on his blog said: “He (Jelks) was issued a Nigerian passport via questionable means and also given a Nigerian name “Amaju” just to prove that he was of Warri decent.

When contacted, the Head of Media, Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Mr Kayode Thomas said he cannot react to a story which source is not a credible news source.
