Enrollees of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) yesterday shut down the clinic for the scheme at the Akure complex of the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH), Ondo State.
The enrolees, who stormed the hospital, protected against what they described as poor service delivery on the part of the management of the health facility.
The angry protesters paralysed activities as they chased the medical personnel as well as other members of staff out of the clinic.
The protesters, who were led by a Director of the Federal Scholarship Board, Mr. Michael Ogunwale, lamented that for almost one year, the NHIS clinic at the UNIMEDTH had been maltreating them.
Ogunwale said the clinic had not been providing prescribed drugs to enrollees for the past seven months as well as lack of access to doctors.
According to him, the situation led to the death of some patients.
He said they could no longer tolerate the poor services they were getting from the UNIMEDTH hence the protest.
Ogunwale called on the NHIS and the Ondo State government to do the needful in the interest of all enrollees who relied on the scheme to get health care services.
The Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC) of UNIMEDTH, Dr. Gbala Michael, had a closed-door meeting with the protesting patients for almost one hour.
At the end, Machael promised to address all issues raised.
