POLICE COMMISSION SUSPENDS PENDING PROMOTION OVER ALLEGATION OF CORRUPTION

The Police Service Commission has suspended special promotion of officers following alleged case of fraud and payment for promotions.

The chairman of the Commission, Mike Okiro, announced at a press briefing on Tuesday in Abuja that the exercise has been put on hold pending investigation into the allegations.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Navy, Senator Isah Misau, had alleged that some police officers paid for promotions.

He stated that some policemen informed him that they paid N2.5m to PSC officials for promotion.

But Okiro disclosed that he had set up a committee which would be chaired by Justice Olufunlola Adekeye (retd.) to investigate the allegations, adding that it has two weeks to submit its findings.

The commission chairman explained that guidelines for promotion have been sent to the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, stressing that the PSC did not unilaterally award special promotions.

He said, “Given the recent avalanche of disparaging reports, comments and allegations revolving around special promotions, most of which are baseless, unfounded and malicious, the Commisssion has taken a decision to put on hold all recommendations for special promotion until further notice.

“When the list of special promotion came, we found out that some juniors were picked over their seniors and that is why we put it on hold and sent it back to the IG to explain.”

He added, “A typical example is Abba Kyari who was promoted last year before his seniors and people clapped for him because he did well.

“We are sending the list to the IG to explain why some juniors were picked over their seniors and if he gives us good reason, we would go ahead with it and if not, we will drop it.”

He said the processed promotions would be reappraised and released at the appropriate time, or referred to the IG for details of the performance that qualified those recommended for special promotion.

The chairman said the major sources of recommendations for special promotions are the IG, Heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies, civil society groups, National Assembly members, governors, traditional rulers and other prominent Nigerians.
