No fewer than 25 students were abducted from the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area, early Monday morning, the Kebbi State Police Command has confirmed.
The attack, carried out by heavily armed bandits, left one staff member dead and another injured, according to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Nafi’u Abubakar Kotarkoshi.
The incident reportedly occurred around 4:00 a.m. when the assailants stormed the school and engaged police officers on duty in a fierce gun battle.
Despite the officers’ efforts, the attackers scaled the school’s perimeter fence and forcibly removed the students from their hostel.
The police spokesperson confirmed that one Hassan Makuku lost his life during the attack, while Ali Shehu sustained gunshot injuries to his right hand.
Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Bello Muhammad Sani, deployed additional police tactical units, alongside military personnel and vigilante groups, to the area.
He noted that the combined team is currently combing suspected escape routes and surrounding forests in a coordinated search and rescue operation aimed at recovering the abducted students and arresting the perpetrators.
The Commissioner appealed to residents to remain calm and vigilant, assuring them of the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
Earlier, SaharaReporters reported that terrorists in the early hours of Monday stormed the Maga Comprehensive Girls’ Secondary School in Kebbi State, abducting an unspecified number of female students and killing at least one staff member.
A school guard was also injured during the attack, which occurred around 5:52am.
The attackers invaded the school compound while the students were preparing for morning routines, launching their assault with sporadic gunfire, HumAngle reports.
SaharaReporters also gathered that the gunmen not only abducted several female students but also left a trail of fear and chaos in their wake.
However, residents noted that the terrorists have not gone far and are urging the Federal and State governments to take urgent action to rescue the girls.
