The Comptroller General of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Mohammad Babandede has insisted that the dismissed 2000 Immigration recruits must pass through screening exercise before being re-absorbed into the Service.
Babandede gave this warning while addressing a Press Conference at the Service headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday following the protest rally staged by the recruits in Abuja last week.
The group, under the auspices of #2000Immigrationrecruits has been protesting the directive by the NIS that they must pass through background checks which includes; security clearance, drug test, certificate verification and the implementation of the ‘age on rank’ policy of the Interior ministry.
However, the Comptroller General has insisted that the Service will continue with the planned screening exercise scheduled to begin on 29th August, 2016 at the NIS headquarters.
“Failure to submit oneself for screening would be regarded as withdrawal of interest in the recruitment exercise,” he pointed out.
While insisting that there was no ulterior motive attached to the screening exercise, the NIS boss assured that those who are cleared will be reabsorbed.
Babandede who maintained that the 2000 recruits were not screened before they were recruited in 2015, noted that “we can’t give a riffle to a drug addict, he will kill people.”
The Comptroller General said those who were protesting against the screening exercise “are drug addicts, brandishing fake certificates” and are “too old to be employed into the Service”.
He assured that no one will be victimized, stressing that the government had made financial provision to capture their salaries.
The 2000 recruits were employed into the Service by a Presidential Committee in February 2015 after the ill-fated recruitment in March, 2014 where some applicants died and many others sustained injuries but where later dismissed later in the year.
