SCORES DIE, MANY MISSING IN KARU, NASARAWA STATE FLOODING

Many people were feared dead while many others were missing as flooding which followed a heavy rain ravaged four villages in the Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State on Tuesday.

Our correspondent, who visited the scene of the incident on Wednesday, observed that several houses along the river banks of Mararraban, Gurku, Kabayi and Ado villages had been washed away and others submerged as household items floated on the river.

Some of the affected residents told our correspondent that they saw dead bodies floating on the Ado River on the night of the down pour.

Confirming the incident to our correspondent in an interview, the Paramount Ruler of Karu, Luka Baba, who visited some of the affected communities, advised the people of the area to always abide by building codes and avoid erecting structures along waterways.

He said, “I am calling on all the entire community of Mararraban, Gurku, Kabayi and Ado to always abide by building codes and stop erecting structures along waterways.”

He, however, directed community heads affected by the flood to compile the names of the missing persons and number of houses destroyed.

The leader of Korodoma community, Alhaji Ahmed Maikeffi, said the number of death in the area could not be ascertained for now as some people were still searching for their family members.

Also confirming the incident to our correspondent shortly after an assessment tour to see the level of damage caused by the flood, the Interim Management Committee Chairman of Karu Local Government Area, Yin-Allah Vundabo,condoled with the families of the deceased and missing persons.

He said the government would give them support as soon as possible.

Our correspondent also observed that some residents who were affected by the incident were evacuating their belongings.

All efforts by our correspondent to reach the coordinator of the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Abdullahi Idris, for the number of casualties were unsuccessful as all lines to his mobile phone could not be reached.
