Two Nigerian military officers have reportedly fled the country after being implicated in an alleged plot to overthrow the nation’s democratic government, according to multiple security sources.
The development comes as security agencies intensify investigations into what officials have described as a “foiled attempt” to destabilize the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Sources within the Nigerian military confirmed to The Cable that the two officers escaped just days before authorities launched a fresh wave of arrests targeting those suspected of involvement in the plot. At least 16 officers have already been detained since the first week of October, while the number of those currently in custody is said to have risen to over 30 following ongoing interrogations.
Identities of the Fleeing Officers
One of the officers on the run has been identified as Major J. M. Ganaks, with service number N/14363. A member of Regular Course 58 of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Ganaks hails from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and was last stationed in Jaji, Kaduna State.
The second officer, Captain G. Binuga (service number N/167722), is a native of Taraba State and a member of Regular Course 64. He was previously attached to the Defence Headquarters Special Operations Force (SOF) in Bida, Niger State.
Both men were reportedly among 18 military personnel listed for arrest in connection with the alleged coup plot but managed to evade security operatives before fleeing Nigeria.
DIA Leads Ongoing Investigation
The Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) is leading the investigation into the alleged conspiracy, coordinating with other branches of the military and national security institutions.
A senior security source disclosed that interrogations of detained officers have produced what authorities described as “useful intelligence” that has led to additional arrests and expanded the scope of the investigation.
“Some of the arrested officers are keeping silent, but many have been cooperative. Their statements have helped security agencies identify other suspects and understand the broader context of the plot,” the source said.
The DIA’s findings are expected to be submitted to the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, for review before any official statement is released to the public.
Nationwide Crackdown and Political Context
The arrests are part of a wider crackdown across military formations in Abuja, Kaduna, Niger, and Taraba States. The move reflects growing concern within the armed forces over loyalty and discipline amid rising political and economic tensions in the country.
Although the Defence Headquarters has yet to issue an official comment on the latest developments, military insiders say the authorities are treating the matter with utmost secrecy to prevent panic or misinformation.
Analysts suggest that the government’s swift response underscores its determination to protect Nigeria’s democratic institutions amid speculation and public unease over instability within the ranks of the armed forces.
President Tinubu, who assumed office in May 2023, has repeatedly emphasized the importance of maintaining constitutional order and military professionalism, warning that any subversive activity against the state will be met with decisive action.
