Rotimi Akeredolu was a man who exhibited passion for every cause he chose to pursue. To his credit, the Amotekun Security outfit which largely helped in stemming the tide of herdsmen incursion into Ondo and other parts of Yorubaland was formed and has been very active till date. This was despite all the pressures, blackmail and arm-twisting  measures from the BUHARI administration.

The success of the outfit has since been replicated in other states of the Federation.

Again when he took up the gauntlet over the issue of APC and a Southern presidential candidate, not many gave him a chance. He never gave a damn. He insisted and other Governors from the South joined him, even though some were not keen. His strong-headedness over the issue paved the way for the emergence of Tinubu as President.

But Aketi had a a major weakness. Events in the last few years of his governorship showed that his major weakness was his wife. She had an unnatural love for power and everything attached to it.

As an Ondo indigene who resides out of the State, I depend on reports, essential unofficial from my colleagues in the media to keep abreast of developments back home. Things were sore bad, but they dared not write. We all know why. Betty was the Governor. She had her ways with everything from juicy contracts to who got what. You paid big to have her grace your events.

When the Governor took I’ll and it was obvious that it was terminal, the grab and snatch began in full force.

Notably Betty knew her husband was ill, yet she went to Imo to contest for the Senate. Of course she was beaten black and blue. IMO no be ONDO. While the husband battled to stay alive in foreign hospital, Betty Akeredolu planned a lavish 70th birthday to last days. Whose money was to be blown on this? Your guess is as good as mine.

The then Ondo first family just didn’t want anyone to smell the seat. They wanted his case managed till his tenure ended. Meanwhile, they virtually abandoned him. They got vouchers and contract papers signed by proxy. This continued until a Commissioner raised an alarm about the unconstitutionality. While Akeredolu battled for life in German hospital, his darling wife was busy holding nocturnal meetings with Ondo politicians about who would succeed her husband and how to checkmate the then Acting Governor. The then Governor’s wife had the temerity to call a meeting of Ondo lawmakers warning them to keep united against the then Acting Governor.

The stories of Akeredolu’s last days on earth would be told by insiders. But we now know that neither the four kids, nor the overbearing wife was with him when he died. They were all busy enjoying the loot they took from Ondo coffers by forging their patriarch’s signature or planning how to loot more. Indeed, one of the late Governor’s associates, who resigned from Ondo Cabinet revealed that the children got to know about their father’s demise through the news.

Aketi is gone. His legacies are there for all to see. He’s left with his creator. Those who claimed to love Ondo State so much so that only a debilitated Governor can rule the State are very much around.

Aiyedatiwa may not have the balls to call them out. But Ondo people know them. And to people in public offices, with wives that has avarice as their first and second nature, learn from this. Ondo people don’t forget, Internet will also remember and document all the sordid deals. It is only a matter of time.
