GOMBE COMMUNITY BEGGING FOR PORTABLE WATER WHILE GOVT BLOWS N150 MILLION ON ANNIVERSARY
By Umar Umar, Gombe
At the time Gombe state government is spending about 150 million naira to celebrate the 20th year anniversary of the creation of the state on 1stOctober, Amada community in Akko Local Government area which is just 25 kilometer way from the state capital is looking for portable drinking water
For over decade, the people of Amada Community have lived under severe condition of lack of access to portable water supply. Due to their criminal negligence despite being close to GOMBE, one may be tempted to assume that the community barely exists on the timeline of authorities of the. State if not only for the highway that links Bauchi and Gombe States thereby connecting the community of Amada to the sight of road users and travelers alike.
It was discovered at the time of filing this report that the community have had three (3) functional wells as their only source of water until some three (3) years ago that is precisely in 2012 that two of the three wells gave up producing water owing to the fact that one of the wells collapsed as the other voluntarily quitted production perhaps resulting from overuse, over-dependence, among other possible factors.
These simultaneous incidences left the people of Amada Community with no option than to depend solely on the last and only producing well which remains in the community. It is vivid from the pictures appended to this report that the community have to cross a seemingly dangerous valley so as to gain access to the only well available.
Speaking to our abujaeporters’ Naana Khadija Kwargana, who visited the community not long ago, the people of the community are stranded and they believe that nobody is airing their predicament to the authorities concerned. It is in view of the preceding that the present report seeks to ventilate the adversity and austerity of their plight especially at this critical moments in the history of our economy.
According to her, “It is true that healthy and portable water supply is more than essential to every human group. It is also established that provision of such basic essentialities of human existence as portable drinkable water first lies on the shoulders of the government”.
“It is on this note that the people of Amada Community communicate to the government and well to do individuals, corporate social bodies and all other persons at the corridors of whatever power to come to their rescue. It is exciting to imagine the number of lives that one could save by assisting such a community,” she said.
Khadija added that, “It is also threatening to imagine the number of lives that could go wild as a result of the negligence of the wealthy few. Let us all rise up to our respective responsibilities in the interest of a better humanity”.
Our investigation shown in the 2015 fiscal, the Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo government budgeted N3.7 billion for water. This year, the government is spending N2.6 billion for the same purpose, but despite such huge spending, some communities in the state are facing acute shortage of water.
This is happening despite the government’s claim that it has spent about N6.3 billion in providing water to the people of the state in the last two years.
